Practicing Gratitude

Posted on

I’ll admit I have a problem. For the longest time I have always focused on the negative and why things aren’t going the way I want them to. I’m not sure where I picked up this terrible habit but I figured now is the time to change my way of thinking! Most negative thinking is centered around self. In order to change a way of thinking lots of practice has to take place. Just like perfecting anything else…it requires a lot of practice! Having an Attitude of Gratitude Helps You To Be More Content

Having An Attitude Of Gratitude Helps You To Be More Content

In the culture we live in we are often bombarded by what we don’t have and why we should go out and buy this or that. As a stay at home mom I have thoughts of wanting a successful career and how my degree is being wasted. Or even having negative thoughts about all the things I didn’t get done that day. When we focus on what we don’t have or didn’t do we can truly become discontent in what we have already. Being Content in your current state will help you become more grateful.

HOW DO I APPROACH GRATITUDE?

Start with prayer.

We should come before the Lord with all our praises, fears, doubts, thankfulness, trials and the list goes on.

Sometimes God will answer our prayers in a way we weren’t expecting. Maybe He was leading us to something we’ve thought wasn’t possible. If we continue to start with prayer God will aid in our efforts towards positive, grateful thinking.

WHAT IS GRATITUDE?

Gratitude is the act of noticing and appreciating all the good things in your life.

If we took just 5 mins of noticing and appreciating all the good in just that particular day, we can start a whole new outlook on life. A positive outlook. It would start to shift your perspective towards all the good things around you.

On a personal note: It is so much easier for me to list the bad things going on in my life than the good. Even though life is truly good…I can easily gravitate towards the negative. It takes more concentration and effort to focus on the positive. So I need this gratitude journal more than ever! I need to change!

“A DAILY ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE INCREASES OUR AWARENESS OF LIFE’S PLEASURES. IT TAKES AN ALREADY GOOD LIFE AND MAKES IT EVEN BETTER.”

HOW CAN I PRACTICE GRATITUDE?

  • Set aside a particular time of day that you can write in your gratitude journal.  Take 5 mins out of your day to jot down what you are grateful for. By writing this down you are training your brain to think positively. Do this everyday!

  • There is nothing too small or too big to be thankful for. It could be anything from a beautiful sunset to modern day conveniences.

  • It doesn’t matter what form you write in…you could even doodle your thoughts!

If you want to get started on your daily gratitude journal you can download this free Printable.
